CHARD Boxing Club is proving so popular it is expanding with the help of a council grant.

It has not yet been open a year but already the club has 115 members who train regularly with head coach Keith Roberts. The youngest is seven-year-old Nathan Hughes while the oldest is in his 50s.

County councillor Jenny Kenton presented a cheque for £250 from her community fund to the club to help accommodate its growing membership.

Mr Roberts said: "It has been a great first year and with so many people joining we need more room.

"We run three classes four times a week at the moment, with the youngest training from 4.30pm to 6pm and the girls at the same time. The juniors and seniors train from 6pm to 8pm.

"Also when the bad weather was here Chard rugby Club trained here."

In May the club is putting on its first show with, they hope, at least 10 members from Chard on the bill.
