Saxophonist Ellie Byfield, pianist Emily Yang and flautist Imogen Massey all sat their exams in November. Both Ellie and Imogen achieved a distinction, with a 88 per cent and 94 per cent pass rate.

A distinction at diploma level is the equivalent to the first year of a Music Conservatoire Degree.

Claire Hawkes, director of music at Leweston, said: "We are delighted with these outstanding results which reflect each girl's dedication and hard work. It is unusual for girls to take a diploma exam while still at school, as Grade 8 must have been achieved at least a year before.

"They don't just require a high standard of performance, but test the candidate in stamina and pacing as well. They must prepare a programme of 40 minutes in length, varied in style and genre.

"Interpretation, tone quality and technical virtuosity are all taken into account. Presentation is 10 per cent of the mark, so the girls had to consider stage presence, wearing evening dress and make a programme with full notes, in keeping with an full evening concert."
