A SNAIL with a difference has taken up residence in a Wincanton garden this week.

The creature is in the form of a large mosaic made out of west Dorset pebbles by landscape gardener Alan Dodge (pictured left) and his brother Andrew (right). Their unusual garden feature forms a centrepiece in a garden designed by Alan's wife Susan for the client's High Street home. Alan, whose Company of Landscapers business is based at Bracken Heath near Leigh, said: "We're always doing unusual things for gardens but this is the first time we've done a mosaic.

"This is to add a feature in a large area of a brick path and it's robust enough to walk on.

"It'll last for years and years."

Mr Dodge said he had seen highly coloured mosaics in Spain but wanted a more natural look for the Wincanton snail. The brothers used pebbles supplied by JC Phillips of Bridport that are ethically sourced in west Dorset to give a range of shades in black, grey and brown.

Mr Dodge said: "It was fun doing this - it would be good to do more."
