members of North Dorset District Council’s Development Control
Committee unanimously voted to refuse an application for six wind
turbines as high as Salisbury Cathedral on green fields next to the
Wincanton-Gillingham Road.
More than 250 of them packed into the Olive Bowl in Gillingham on
Thursday 2nd July to protest against Ecotricity’s application,
recommended for approval by the district council’s planning officers.
But after a long day of submissions, all from objectors who included
MP Bob Walter and a young woman who described in vivid detail the
medical effects of stress, the committee threw out the scheme on
grounds of visual impact, noise, lack of convincing wind speed data
and “substantial loss of amenity” for more almost 50 homes within 2km
of the site.
