A group of young carers have been planning, filming and producing their own short DVD called “Life As We Know It” to illustrate the issues and challenges they face in their caring role. Since January, 19 young people aged between 13–19 have been meeting weekly at Muscliff Park Youth Centre to complete the project, which they will show to decision makers at Bournemouth Town Hall on Wednesday 27th March, at 5pm.

The DVD, commissioned by Bournemouth LINks, provides an opportunity to young people who have caring responsibilities to be able to speak out about the issues and challenges that they face in their day to day lives. The DVD also gives information and advice to young people that might be an unidentified young carer, as well as hints and tips to professionals that work with young carers. After the launch event, the DVD will be distributed to schools and youth centres across the Town to be used to educate young people and professionals about the plight of young carers.

The project has been led by young people from the Bournemouth Young Carers 13+ group, which is delivered in partnership between Action for Children and Bournemouth Borough Council Integrated Youth Service. The youngsters learned new skills such as storyboarding, script writing, animation, camera operation, interviewing and editing. In addition to the film, the young people also wrote and recorded their own original soundtrack to the DVD.

Chris Wakefield from Bournemouth LINks said: “Projects like these highlight the issues that young carers go through every day. These are strong young people who did not choose to become carers, but have taken on the role admirably. We are pleased to have been able to support the putting together of this DVD.”

Kieran Faulkner, aged 16 from Bournemouth said: “Being involved in this process has helped me to improve my communication skills, unwind and relax whilst doing something that I enjoy. I hope this DVD enlightens others to the life young carers have and helps them to understand what we go through on a day to day basis.”

Star Edwards, aged 16 from Bournemouth said: “I have been part of the young carers project for eight years. Caring for a little brother with autism has meant that I have had to grow up quicker than others and realise the responsibilities that I have. Being able to attend a young carers group where everyone else understands what you are going through gives us the opportunities that we would otherwise miss out on.”
