MORE than a thousand people are expected to pull on their running shoes and take to the streets of Yeovil next month.

Following the success of its 2011 debut, the second Yeovil Half Marathon has been scheduled for Sunday, March 25.

It is hoped up to 1,500 runners will pound the streets for 13.1 miles, starting and finishing at Huish Park, the home of Yeovil Town FC.

More than 600 people finished last year's race, which provided a chance to compete while raising funds for local charities.

However, the runners will have to keep a close eye on the time, as the race falls on the day that the clocks go forward and will start at 9am.

More than 600 people have already registered, including over 100 from Yeovil Town Road Running Club.

Steve Elliott, of race organisers Total Buzz, said: "We are expecting to smash last year's numbers, and I'm convinced we will see some new course records too.

"The town got behind this event last year and all I can ask is for people to get behind it again this year.

"What visiting athletes remembered from last year was the levels of support from people along the course.

"If we can replicate that again this year, we will start to build a legacy for the event and safeguard it in the future."

The race will again have a 'King of the Hill' contest, where participants can win a cash prize by posting the quickest split time up Hendford Hill.

Cash prizes are also available for the overall male and female victors, and to anyone who manages to beat last year's course records.

The men's record is 1.12:35, while the women's stands at 1.28:07.

Local businesses have already pledged their support, with Nuffield Health Centre offering membership discounts as prizes.

A practice run will be held next Sunday from 10am, starting at Nuffield. For more information visit www.total buzzevents.com/yeovil_half_ marathon.shtml.
