The officer was taken to Poole Hospital, suffering from head injuries. He remained overnight in hospital, but was discharged this morning.

Dorset's Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill has spoken out about the attack.

"I am saddened to hear that a Police Officer was attacked while undertaking his duties in Bournemouth" said Mr Underhill.

"This reminds us all that policing is dangerous. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family."
