Wincanton Town sign striker Matt Chant to boost title bid
WINCANTON Town believe they have signed a striker that could prove the difference between them finishing Magna Dorset Premier League also-rans and title winners.
The promotion hopefuls are believed to have beaten four other clubs to secure the services of former Gillingham Town man Matt Chant.
The versatile attacker has dropped a league and two divisions to sign for the Moor Lane outfit after manager Paul Down convinced Chant of the club's Toolstation Western League ambition.
He said: "Matt signed for us last week and told us he had five clubs in for him. We had him down on Wednesday, chatted for an hour and a half and we are delighted that he signed.

"He is a quality player and could be the difference between us winning the league and finishing in the top three. He will be a big signing for us and he is coming at the right time with our game against (third-placed) Portland United coming up."
Town turn attentions to the Somerset Senior Cup this weekend and are prepared to give up home advantage in the quarter-finals against Langford Rovers 2000 to ensure the game does not fall foul of the wet weather.
Wincanton travelled to the Somerset County League Premier Division side last season, winning by the odd goal in five and have no concerns about repeating the journey if it aids their bid for MDPL silverware.
"As it stands we are playing them at home but with the way the pitch is we may have to switch it to their pitch to avoid fixture congestion as if the game is postponed it will keep rolling over to the next weekend," said Down.
"With the way the weather is looking it could roll over for four to five weeks, which would put us too many games behind in the league, which is always going to be the priority.
"We went there last year and won 3-2. It was a close game but we got the win and there is no reason why we can't do it again if we have to switch. We are confident but not over-confident. We know it will be tricky as they are on a decent run."
Down added a decision on switching the fixture would be made either today or tomorrow. "It is a balancing act and a catch 22," he said. "We are a little bit conscious that we have played the least amount of games in our league.
"Our pitch does get waterlogged easily because we are low in the water table and we are concerned that the game may impact on the league. But we are in the quarter-final, there are only a couple of games until the final."
