Wimborne celebrates growth of Fair Trade
THE Mayor of Wimborne, Councillor John Burden, is to launch the 2013 edition of Wimborne's Fair Trade Directory next Friday, 8th March in the Council Chamber of Wimborne Town Hall.
Since the last edition, over five years ago, the number of outlets offering fairly traded goods –retailers, supermarkets, civic offices, B&Bs – has grown almost fourfold.
"This is great news in difficult economic times," commented Robert Pearce, convenor of the town's fair trade steering group. He added: "Three things have driven this expansion. Firstly the growing demand of shoppers to know that the goods they're buying are of good quality, are environmentally sustainable and provide the producers a decent living and more control over their own lives. Additionally shops and other businesses want to play their part in behaving ethically and in helping to eradicate global poverty. And finally several large confectionery and sugar companies have converted all or part of their ranges to fair trade in response to popular demand."
All fair trade enthusiasts and those who would like to know more are invited to the Town Hall, on Friday, 8th March between 10.30 -11.30am.
