WIMBORNE gained a comfortable Southern Counties South victory in front of a large crowd at Leigh Park on Saturday but the final scoreline does no justice to the spirited display given by the visitors.

Blandford opened the match with a strong attack but Wimborne turned the ball over and mounted a counter attack. A kick ahead by Tom Brown was gathered by Phil Andrews who sped over for the opening try, converted by James Mikolajewski.

Minutes later Jason Llewellyn made a break up the blind side before slipping the ball to Mikolajewski who made ground before being tackled. Sean Murphy was on hand to gather the ball and score a try that Mikolajewski converted.

Blandford continued to hold a territorial advantage but fine defence by Wimborne prevented the visitors from crossing the try line, and Wimborne increased their lead with a series of tries from deep inside their own 22. The first was a solo run by Phil Andrews; the second followed a long run by Mikolajewski leading to a try by Murphy; the third followed a Blandford handling mistake and led to a long run by Andrews. Mikolajewski converted all three.

Blandford continued to press and forced Wimborne to concede a number of penalties to keep them out. They were eventually rewarded just before half-time when the home defence was stretched and swift handling put the winger over in the corner for a try that was converted with an excellent kick.

The second-half opened with Wimborne quickly increasing their lead when a lineout ball was spun along the line to Andrews who sped through to score his fourth. Mikolajewski converted. Blandford again forced Wimborne into conceding penalties that led to Tom Brown being yellow carded. The visitors notched their second score in the corner when the ball was recycled quickly after a good three-quarter move.

Wimborne continued to impress with the ball in hand and scored three more tries. The first came from a rolling maul with captain Richie Brokenshire forcing his way over. From the resulting kick-off Andy Hopkins caught the ball, set up a ruck and the ball was quickly moved away.

Adam Lennon came into the line to make a clean break before feeding Andrews who outpaced the Blandford defence.

The final score came when Matt Morris capped a fine display at flanker with a break from a quickly taken penalty that led to George Wareham scoring. Mikolajewski converted all three to complete a 100 per cent record with the boot.
