Wimborne RFC 40-16 Trowbridge RFC: Freescoring Wimborne hit second place with another win

Free-scoring Wimborne RFC sealed their seventh win in a row with a comfortable victory over Trowbridge.

The Dorset side moved into second place in Southern Counties South with a 40-16 win, despite making a slow start.

Two tries from Jim Brokenshire and scores from Andy Unwin, Matt Warwick, Steve King and Tom Moysey helped Wimborne to the bonus-point win - and edge closer to league leaders Devizes.

"We allowed them into the game and it took a while to get going. Once we got the ball and did the things that we do well - then the points started to come."

The visitors made the brighter start, and Lloyd Davies capitalised on some early mistakes from Wimborne to steer his side to an early 6-0 lead.

The nervous start ended when Unwin scored the first of six Wimborne tries. Following a line-out the powerful prop powered over the line as Wimborne finally got going.

Another mistake cost Wimborne their lead as Davies slotted home another penalty to shift the game back in favour of the visitors. However, a comical try from Wimborne opened up the game - allowing the home side to race away with contest.

Trowbdige tried to clear a loose ball from their line, only for it to rebound off their own post. The ball fell kindly to Warwick who touched down against the post, despite appearing to knock-on the ball at the decisive moment. 

Warwick was a little shaken up, as he smashed his head against the post, and spent most of the game on the touchline.

The hosts pulled away before the break after a powerful scrum forced a turnover. Declan Foley took the ball from the scrum and fed King who strolled in under the posts to give Wimborne a 12-point lead at half time.

Wimborne's dominance continued after the interval and they soon had their bonus point with the fourth try of the game. After some persistent pressure, Moysey found a gap and snuck over the line to all but end the contest.

However, Trowbridge restored some pride immediately as Lewis Jordan intercepted a wayward Wimborne pass and ran in for the visitors' opening try.

Two late scores from Brokenshire gave the Dorset side a healthy scoreline, including his second effort which saw him beat a host of Trowbridge players as Wimborne hit the 40-point mark.

Russ Tinsdale may have been lucky to escape with a yellow card, after a punch on the Trowbridge fly-half. The referee appeared to take a lenient approach with the game winding down, and produced a yellow card.

Wimborne look to continue their good form when they host Devizes in the semi-final of the Dorset and Wilts Cup next weekend.
