Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has agreed to hand the Pavilion Theatre to a community-run organisation.

At a council meeting on Thursday 21st February, the beleaguered theater was effectively saved from demolition when a vote agreed to turn it over to a group led by local businessman.

A lengthy and emotional debate saw members of the council and community groups alike speak in favour of protecting the landmark theatre after the council deemed it too expensive to continue running last year.

The council has agreed to keep the Pavilion operating until the end of May, it is not currently known how long the building will likely remain unused while the process of transferring it to the new operators takes place.
