Wet Christmas for Dorset as rain and flooding set to continue

Dorset is set for a wet Christmas with flood warnings still in place across the county.

With thousands of people expected to travel today to visit friends and family, commuters are being warned to be careful and not drive through flood water.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service have rescued dozens of people who have driven through standing water, and are reminding people not to go near dangerous flooding.

A yellow weather warning is still in force from the Met Office across Dorset, with showers expected to continue tomorrow.

Andy Page, Met Office Chief Forecaster said: "It's important that people keep weather aware by staying up to date with Met Office forecasts and Environment Agency Flood Warnings during this period of unsettled weather, especially as they make their way to friends and family for the Christmas period.

"We'd advise people in the area affected to expect some disruption to travel and take precautions if they are in an area at risk from heavy rain and flooding."

Several minor roads remain shut due to flood water, while flood warnings are still in place on the River Avon, River Frome, River Wey and The South Winterbourne Valley.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Further spells of rain are expected to affect southwest England during Christmas Eve.

"Given already saturated ground from recent rainfall, the public should be prepared for an increased risk of both surface water and river flooding along with disruption to travel."
