Verwood Mayor buys first poppy
VERWOOD Mayor, Councillor Peter Richardson has bought the first poppy from Norman Egerton, who served in the Royal Navy during and after the Second World War.
Mr Egerton served as a medic aboard a tank landing craft on D-Day, delivering Sherman tanks and their American crews to Omaha Beach. Later he served on the destroyer Volage, which was sunk by a mine in the Mediterranean and then on a fleet minesweeper making the seas safe again after the war had ended.
