He is in the planning stage but said he had received support and encouragement since news of his project appeared last week in The Western Gazette.

He is now looking for people to volunteer as steering group members, presenters, salespeople, promoters, sound engineers and administration workers to get the station off the ground, and is encouraging them to visit www.sherbornefm.co.uk, email him at info@sherbornefm.co.uk or call 01935 817402.

He said: "We intend to begin community radio broadcasting shortly to the Sherborne area, providing coverage of local activities, facilities and services, as well as issues of particular importance to individuals and the community generally.

"We aim also to bring social gain to Sherborne area through training, fundraising, student education and improvement of community knowledge to the residents of Sherborne.

"This will include the strengthening of community links by promoting of social inclusion, and encouraging participation in cultural activities, in particular addressing the younger and retired members of the community.

"We hope to promote the free flow of information, and opinion, and to encourage creative expression. We will be in partnership with the Dorset Area Partnership, social services, the police, health services, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Sherborne tourism, churches of all denominations, and many local voluntary organisations.

Mr Tucker said he was also looking for business sponsors and encouraged anyone who might be interested to contact him.

He is in the process of seeking charitable grants and lottery funds for the project.
