Kevin Laskey from Moretonhampstead in Devon was a clear winner of the Taunton club’s annual Royal British Legion Cup Trial at Churchinford, Somerset on Saturday.

The event, which attracted 43 starters, was staged over three laps of ten sections at aptly named Trickey Warren, where the hazards featured climbs over mud and rocks and cambers. The seventh section, a tiered and slippery climb over a steep bank, was the more difficult.

In the clubman class Laskey completed his first lap for the loss of two marks to John Souch’s five, and he went further ahead as the event progressed. David Fisher held an eight-mark advantage over Tim Heard in the twin shock class on completion of the opening lap, but after losing 13 to Heard’s three on lap two, it all went wrong for the Somerton clubman and Heard had a final advantage of five.

There was a close contest between Trevor Wall and Mike Walsh in the twin shock class on the easier alternative route. Walsh completed the first lap with a clean sheet to Wall’s single mark mistake, but at the end of the second lap they were all square, then Wall went ahead on the final lap losing just two marks to Walsh’s four.

Yeovil expert Ricky Wiggins, who finished in 13th place in the recent National Scott Trial on the North Yorkshire moors, must have given his grandad, Bill Collins, some sound advice as he collected the over 50 years of age award with laps of nil, three and two.
