Tesco voted worst supermarket in Which? poll

Tesco has been voted the worst supermarket in a survey of more than 11,000 consumers.

The poll, carried out by consumer watchdog Which?, shows the retail giant to be the lowest-rated of the nine supermarkets with a customer score of 45 per cent.

This compares to poll-topping supermarket Waitrose, which notched 82 per cent and received five-star ratings for its customer service and the quality of its fresh produce.

Aldi came second with a customer score of 74 per cent, and Lidl was third with 69 per cent.

Marks & Spencer came fourth with a customer score of 68 per cent, followed by Morrisons which notched 59 per cent. Sainsbury’s came sixth with 58 per cent, followed by Asda, which scored 53 per cent.

The Co-operative received a customer score of 48 per cent, slightly above that of Tesco.

Tesco received poor marks for its pricing, store environment, quality of fresh produce and customer service. Only 27 per cent of those surveyed felt Tesco is helping to ease the strain on their food budget.

Which? asked 11,492 of its members in October 2012 about the supermarkets they've shopped at over the past six months. The overall customer score is a combination of customer satisfaction and the likelihood they’d recommend it to a friend.

The survey revealed consumers’ biggest bugbear with supermarkets is not being able to compare products due to different units being used.

Which? members also said they want supermarkets to keep special offers simple – some 55 per cent said straight discounts were their preferred type of special offer, compared to petrol vouchers (16 per cent) or buy-one-get-one-free deals (11 per cent).

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “Millions of customers shop regularly with Tesco and we are always looking at ways to improve their shopping experience.

“We have made a £1 billion commitment to make Tesco better for our UK customers and since this survey in October 2012, we have had an encouraging Christmas and New Year and are delivering further improvements this year.

“We are focusing on improving the look of stores, giving customers great value and making sure they can get all the help they need, which is why we've recruited 8,000 more colleagues.”
