A weekend of two very distinct halves has heralded the start of autumn in the West and it seems it is time to replace the suncream and deck chairs with waterproofs and umbrellas as wet and windy weather lashes the region.

After months of summer rain September has been one of the high-spots of 2012 – but yesterday’s miserable weather put an end to that.
Meteorologists say winds of up to 60mph will hit parts of Scotland in the next 24 hours while up to 60mm of rain will fall locally in pockets of Britain before the end of tonight.

Paul Mott, meteorologist at MeteoGroup, warned: “There is going to be a big change in the weather from what we have had recently.”
Parts of Britain have basked in warm temperatures in the mid-20s during September, a welcome break from the rain and wind which dogged much of July and August.
Mr Mott said: “Some parts of the country have enjoyed some very dry and warm days during September, with barely a couple of inches of rainfall.
“There is likely to be some localised flooding, and gusts of up to 60mph in parts of Scotland, which is enough to pull up the odd tree.”
The Environment Agency has also put dozens of areas under medium flood risk for the next two days, mostly in the south west and northern England.
But Mr Mott said there was likely to be some respite as the week went on, particularly in southern England.
He said: “I think the worst of the weather will be over the next couple of days and will settle down in the south in time for the weekend.”
The Environment Agency warning said Devon could be particularly badly hit – with the rivers Teign, Dart, Exe, Otter and Axe at risk.
Intense showers were also expected in the early hours of today in Somerset, some parts of Dorset and areas around the Bristol Avon.
