STALBRIDGE library will be run by volunteers from next month.

Volunteers are stepping in at seven Dorset libraries, including Stalbridge, after county council funding cuts left them facing closure.

After negotiations between community groups and council officials, a programme to hand some libraries into volunteers began across the county last week, with Stalbridge set to hand over on Tuesday, February 12.

Graham Lee, chairman of Association of Friends of Dorset Libraries (Ad Lib), said: "The response of the community to this challenge has been remarkable.

After the transfer, libraries will be independent and self-governed, but the council will provide around £5,500 a year of support with books, staffing, and IT services.

Opening hours may alter but library catalogues and membership will remain the same. Reading groups and the home library service will operate as normal.
