CHRISTMAS got off to a cold and sparkling start at Tisbury last Saturday as this year's Tiz The Season festival brought Santa Claus, carols, colourful market stalls, delicious hot food and a new canopy of lights to the South Wiltshire town.

Tis The Season committee member Roger Barnard, of Beaudesert, one of Tisbury's most distinctive independent shops, said: "Tiz The Season event kicked off Christmas in Tisbury for the over 2,500 estimated visitors and locals who enjoyed the wonderfully festive feeling of the street market, carol singers and Silver Band on a crisp, cold but dry afternoon and evening.

"Each year, Tiz The Season has brought increasing numbers of people into the village to sample the seasonal delights available from its impressive array of independent High Street shops and visiting stallholders from the Anonymous Travelling Market. And this year the whole experience was even more magical under a canopy of new Christmas lights over The Square.

"Santa was also on hand to find out what 150 local children who visited him in his grotto wanted for Christmas, so let's hope that mum and dad found time between listening to the Carol Singers from St John's Church and the Silver Band from Shaftesbury to find most things on their lists, as one can in Tisbury's interesting mix of shops."

Emma House of The Anonymous Travelling Market said ATM always enjoyed going to Tiz The Season: "Tisbury works hard to create a fantastic event full of atmosphere and fun which showcases all the vibrant independent shops."

Jilly Sitch, secretary of Tisbury Business Association, which supports Tiz The Season, was also thrilled by the success - and encouraged people to come to Tisbury, not just at Christmas: "If you missed this year's event be sure to come and explore the village anyway - you'll see why everyone's talking about Tisbury!"
