Simon says - advertising rocks and rolls
SIMON Pounds, Wimborne’s picture framer, has just completed writing his debut book – Advertising Rocks - And Invariably Rolls.
The memoir is set in the 1980s and follows the rollercoaster ride of his successful endeavours to build an advertising agency in Asia.
“I was rejected for employment by agencies in London, due in part to my laziness, ineptitude and notorious stupidity and eventually decided to buy a one-way ticket to Hong Kong to pursue my dream of becoming a copywriter and creative director,” said Simon.
He settled for eight years of employment in Hong Kong and Singapore by publishing and media companies, until one day he spotted an opportunity to work for himself. Within 12 months he was embroiled in building his own advertising agency in Hong Kong, which led eventually to a subsidiary in Singapore.

“This is not a how-to book on advertising. It’s light-hearted, it’s fast-paced and it’s been written to delight,” said Simon.
During his career, Simon helped to promote BUPA, Habitat, Canadian Airlines, Scholl, Maybelline, HSBC, Volvo, Porsche and Newsweek, to name but a few. Not all of them make it into the book. He has carefully chosen stories that offer the greatest entertainment for the reader and then carefully wrapped them in a candy-coating of rock ’n’ roll.
Some of the chapters take the reader out of Hong Kong to India, Pakistan, Vietnam and the USA, interweaving the stories with descriptions of prominent landmarks and humorous travel anecdotes. Simon also explains how it was he came to meet (or work with) famous people such as Kenneth Williams, David Ogilvy, Terence Conran, Terry Scott.

“I have a number of books available at Wimborne Picture Framing up at Pamphill Dairy complex and will be more than happy to sign copies,” said Simon.
