Sherborne youngsters celebrate Chinese New Year in style
CHILDREN in Sherborne enjoyed a series of activities to mark Chinese New Year.
Pupils at Sherborne Abbey Primary School spent a day learning about Chinese customs and traditions as the year of the snake approached.
About 110 youngsters in reception, year one and year two decorated red oriental envelopes, painted willow pattern plates, sang dragon songs and listened to stories.
Senior pupils tasted a range of Chinese food such as prawn crackers and spring rolls, built lanterns, created paper dragons and made lucky New Year envelopes.

Headteacher Ann Marie Kampf said: “It was a wonderful day. The children loved engaging in the different activities, as well as learning more about another culture.
“They also had an opportunity to write their names in Chinese.
“This was all to mark the Chinese New Year, as part of our ongoing programme of cultural awareness.
“All the children had great fun learning about Chinese customs and traditions.
“Most of the pupils were lucky enough to open a Fortune Cookie too.”
Mrs Kampf said the pupils then took their craft work home to show their parents.
She said: “It was both a fun and educational day.”
In the afternoon the children were also treated to a samba drumming demonstration.
Hannah Kenway, of the Dorset Music Service, visited to promote a new workshop starting at the school after the half-term holidays. The exhibition featured drumming and rhythm skills.
The first session will take place on Thursday, February 28, and will run every Thursday from 4pm to 4.45pm. The classes cost £1 per session and are open to any child attending a primary school in the Sherborne area.
