Sherborne pupils armed with a Roman knowledge
SHERBORNE children were transported back to Roman times when they took part in a hands-on history event.
Year 3 pupils at Leweston Prep were visited by historian Toby Stok [corr], of Yeovil, who showed the class a variety of Roman artefacts originally discovered in and around the town.

Children had the chance to investigate a glass bottle, clay pots and a scoop, metal brooches, a bronze spear, axe heads and even a gadget for cleaning nails and ears.
Teacher Victoria Bridgeman-Sutton said it was a wonderful day where pupils could immerse themselves in history.

She said: “The day was conducted in such a way that the children didn’t even know they were learning. They were just having fun and it was great.
“The fact that they were experiencing items that were discovered in their local area was just fantastic.”
In the afternoon pupils used Roman tesserae stone cubes to make mosaic names and play a game of five stones where they learnt that cheats would have a finger broken as punishment.
After making archaeological records of the artefacts which included drawings and a report, the children discussed what they had learnt, dressed up in replica clothing and tried on a Roman helmet.
Mrs Bridgeman-Sutton said: “The children discovered the shield could also be used as shelter from the rain during breaks from marching and even as a stretcher if someone was wounded.”
Pupils decorated their own cardboard shields with powerful symbols and learned an army drill with formations which they performed in an assembly.
Mrs Bridgeman-Sutton said: “This also encouraged the children to use team work and communicate together.
“We have invited Mr Stok to the school a number of times and his workshops are excellent. We hope he will return again soon.”
She said pupils told her it was a fantastic day and they learnt about Roman life in an exciting way.
