THE future of Shaftesbury Leisure Pool has been cast into doubt after its roof collapsed under the weight of last week's snow.

Pool manager Sarah Wheeler discovered the crumpled structure, and large roofing panels in the pool, during her routine inspection last Monday morning.

The pool was awarded £39,600 Inspired Facilities funding to fix its leaky roof as part of Sport England's Olympic legacy last year.

Damage caused by the recent snow means the pool now faces an uncertain future.

A spokesman for Shaftesbury Leisure, the not-for-profit community organisation that runs the pool, said: "The full extent of the damage cannot be confirmed until the remaining sections of roof have been made safe.

"The future of the pool is now in the hands of the building's insurers working on behalf of North Dorset District Council and the Shaftesbury Town Council who have yet to agree - in principle - a long term Service Level Agreement for the pool."

It is hoped that Shaftesbury Town Council will reach a decision on future funding for the pool by the end of this month.

Shaftesbury Leisure is hopeful that the pool will reopen.

The spokesman added: "This news will come as a disappointment to patrons of the pool, especially those who visit on a regular basis.

"However, the directors of Shaftesbury Leisure Ltd are confident that with a favourable outcome from Shaftesbury Town Council and the continued support from North Dorset District Council and their insurers, the Shaftesbury Leisure Pool will be able to open its doors again with a new roof and improved facilities."

Shaftesbury Leisure has thanked Ms Wheeler and Mike Coker and his team at North Dorset District Council for their hard work and support since the roof collapsed.

"Our thanks also go out to those members of the public who have continued to show their support for the pool and we hope will be able to do so for many years to come," the spokesman added.
