On Sunday 10th February, two of Dorset's finest bands, Pronghorn and the Skimmity Hitchers, support the new Wimborne Minster Folk Festival with a fundraising gig at Mr Kyps in Poole. Both acts have been regulars at the legendary Wimborne folk weekend for years. When a new team of local volunteers stepped in to save the event, following its founders' retirement last year, the bands gallantly offered to do their bit to rally support for 2013's event. Doors open at 7pm with support from DJs Dapper Dan (aka Wimborne town crier Chris Brown) and the Maccassaman. Tickets from www.wimbornefolk.co.uk and www.mrkyps.net.
On Friday 15th February Bellowhead have their only local date at Poole's Lighthouse. The band released amighty new album, Broadside in October 2012. It entered the album charts at 16, the highest ever position for an album of traditional based material and their latest single, Roll the Woodpile Down, is already a regular listen on BBC Radio 2. The big (11 piece) band - incorporates top-notch jazz, world, folk and classical musicians in a swathe of brass, strings, squeezebox, percussion and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. They have helped to transport traditional folk music into hitherto unknown territory, introducing a huge, new and enthusiastic audience to it with them.
