Running on Bournemouth beach for kidney research
Some of the UK's brightest scientific minds swapped their lab coats for running shoes on Thursday when they hit Bournemouth beach to raise vital funds for national charity Kidney Research UK – the UK's leading funder of research into the treatment and prevention of kidney disease.
Eighty researchers, academics and healthcare professionals who specialise in kidney disease took part in the early morning fun run, which covered a distance of five kilometres and marked the start of World Kidney Day 2013.

The event coincided with the annual British Transplant Society (BTS) and Renal Association congress – held in Bournemouth this week [13-15 March].
All those taking part in the run are delegates at the conference and many have received support from Kidney Research UK throughout their careers.

Dr Jill Norman is carrying out research into kidney disease at University College London with funding from the Charity and took part in the run.
"I wanted to take part because it seemed a great way to mark World Kidney Day," explained Dr Norman.ã¿¿ "It's also fantastic opportunity to raise money for a good cause.
"As a researcher, I can tell you there isn't nearly enough research being carried out into kidney disease. Charities like Kidney Research UK are critical in providing funding for research and it's vitally important that we support them."
