Review of the year: 2012 in Dorset - part three

The summer of 2012 brought the Olympic games to Dorset as Weymouth and Portland hosted sailing events for the London Games.

However, before the Games got into full swing- the entire county was out on the streets to welcome the Olympic Torch are cheer on the local torch-bearers.

Dorset didn't have a promising start to July as floods caused chaos , with homes evacuated in Bridport.

The flooding continued across the county, and there were fears the Olympic Torch Relay route may have to be diverted to avoid any problems.

However, luckily the Relay wasn't affected by the weather - as thousands turned out to get a glimpse of the Olympic Flame.

In July, The Olympic Torch made it's way through Dorset, visiting Shaftesbury's Gold Hill and on to Dorchester, before evening celebrations on a very soggy Weymouth Beach.

The following day, the famous flame toured Weymouth and Portland, before travelling through Purbeck to Swanage and across to a very busy Poole and Bournemouth.

After evening celebrations in Bournemouth, the Torch visited Christchurch before moving onto Hampshire.

The bodies of Rosemary Snell and Michael Rolfe was discovered buried in a landslide at the Beamisnter Tunnel.

The couple had been in their car, and laid undiscovered for more than a week before being discovered by fire crews.

Sherborne was stunned this summer as celebrities turned up at Sherborne Abbey to see Spooks actor Max Brown marry former Sherborne Girls' School student Annabelle Horsey.

Famous faces including Fern Cotton and David Walliams turned up in the Dorset town.

A burlesque dancer was banned from selling poppies for the Royal British Legion in Sherborne because of her 'inappropriate' costume in July.

Jo Freestone raised hundreds of pounds for the annual appeal, but was told her performance was 'not very Sherborne.'

Heavy rain earlier in the year caused a fatal landslide at Burton Bradstock. Charlotte Blackman, 22-year-old from Derbyshire was killed after tonnes of rocks fell on her,

Rescue teams tried overnight to save Charlotte, but her body was discovered overnight.

Dorset's Peter Wilson won Great Britain's third gold medal of the 2012 London Olympic Games in the men's double trap.

Wilson, who lives near Sherborne will be awarded an MBE for his achievement.

Ben Ainslie sailed into the record books as he grabbed his fourth Olympic gold medal at Weymouth and Portland.

Ainslie's medal race was watched by thousands of keen fans on Weymouth Beach - cheering on their hero in the glorious summer sunshine.

Dorset-based horse rider William Fox-Pitt helped Team GB equestrian team claim a silver medal.

The rider based in Sturminster Newton impressed alongside Zara Phillips, Nicola Wilson, Mary King and Tina Cook.

In September, a Sherborne teenager was congratulated by Chris Packham and Bill Oddie for creating an anti-badger cull website.

The site, set up by 15-year-old Olivia Darling-Finan attracted 4,000 hits in less than two weeks.

The Great Dorset Steam Fair and The Bournemouth Air Festival proved very popular with tourists and locals across Dorset.

The Steam Fair had to put up with muddy conditions, which saw some events cancelled, while The Air Festival paid tribute to Jon Egging, the Red Arrows pilot who died at the 2011 event.
