Railway anniversary celebrations in Blandford
LAST year saw the 150th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Somerset Central and Dorset Central Railways into the Somerset & Dorset Railway.
It was also, on 8th September, the 50th anniversary of the last Pines Express, and next year will be the 50th anniversary of the closure of the line.
This year, on 31st August, will be the 150th anniversary of the 1863 completion of the S&D through route from Wimborne Junction to Burnham, when the last section was finished from Blandford St Mary to Templecombe Lower.
It included the resited Blandford Station and the Stour Bridge. Trains began operating from Burnham to Poole using running powers over the L&SWR from Wimborne to Poole's original station at Hamworthy.
