Two people were rescued from the sea and airlifted to hospital after their powerboat flipped during a race in Weymouth Bay today.

They were flown in the coastguard and air ambulance helicopters to Southampton General Hospital after being recovered from the water by lifeboatmen.

The crash happened at 2.30pm near Weymouth town beach and the harbour entrance.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "The casualties were recovered from the water and to enable a quick transfer to hospital, the most severely injured casualty was taken aboard the Weymouth RNLI lifeboat and winched by the Portland Coastguard Rescue Helicopter to fly onwards to Southampton General Hospital.
