Pothole backlog reaches £10.5bn to salvage 'crumbling roads'
Councils need as much as £10.5 billion to bring Britain’s “crumbling roads” back to a good condition, according to a report.
Local authorities in England and Wales filled in more than two million potholes last year – a 29 per cent increase on 2011, the report from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) showed.
This filling in cost £113 million, with £32 million paid out in compensation. The report said pay-outs were 50 per cent up on the 2011 figure.
Local authorities are responsible for 95 per cent of the country’s roads.
