Children and staff at a Poole school have been given a special preview of their new building - due to open next September.

Dressed in hard hats and high-visibility jackets, children from Heatherlands First School visited the building site to watch contractors at work.

The £5 million project will be completed next spring, but the school is already using a new Foundation class-base, completed this summer.

Sally Burns, Headteacher at Heatherlands First School, said: "A major building site outside the classroom window is impossible to ignore, so we've been actively using it to stimulate classroom discussions and activities.

"The children have had their own builders' yard in their outdoor learning area where they have been making homes for three little pigs."

From next summer, Heatherlands School will become a primary school for children aged four to eleven. The school will grow by one year group each year, until it will be a full primary school by 2015.

"The new layout of our Foundation stage classrooms has made a big difference to the way the children interact with each other" added Mrs Burns.

"We were spread out in different buildings before; now we have a reception class-base that brings the whole year group together, lends itself to shared learning experiences and is helping the children make friends across classes."
