Poole Pirates: Matt Ford praises Elite League champions after Birmingham Brummies win
POOLE Pirates boss Matt Ford praised his side’s character after clinching the Elite League championship – their second title in three years.
Despite being rock bottom of the Elite League table in May, Poole secured a last-gasp playoff spot – going on to defeat the Swindon Robins and last night completed victory over the Birmingham Brummies in the Grand Final
Speaking after last night’s 104-79 aggregate win, Ford said: “It’s been a stunning effort from everyone at the club. We were written off five months ago, but no one at Wimborne Road dropped their heads.
“The team have been awesome in the playoffs and shown just how much character and commitment exists at Poole Speedway. Birmingham are a good side but we gained home and away wins over them when it mattered in the Grand Final.

“It is such a wonderful feeling to be champions once again.
“Twice in the last four seasons, we have been in Birmingham’s position – top of the table – but have failed to clinch the championship after losing the final. We know how the Brummies must be feeling but this is playoff speedway and I can’t praise my lads enough for the way in which they applied themselves at the key times.”
The Pirates had already racked up a 21-point lead from the first leg and last night’s 47-43 win confirmed the title for Poole.
Darcy Ward and Josh Grajczonek were in fine form for the visitors – as Chris Harris and J Doyle put in strong performances for the hosts.
The Pirates are set to celebrate their success tonight at the Blue Ribband meeting at Wimborne Road.
“I’m now appealing to every pirate fan and Dorset sports fan to be at Poole Speedway for what will be a party atmosphere in our past meeting of the season” added Ford.
“Come and welcome home the title winners for the first time.”
