The Conservative Party has won a by-election in the Poole Council ward of Branksome East.

Jane Thomas comfortably won the seat with 553 votes, ahead of Jenny Patroni of the Liberal Democrats and Peter Portnoi of the Poole People Party.

A by-election was called following the resignation of Cllr Stephen Rollo-Smith.

Poole Borough Council remains in no overall control with 21 Conservative councillors, 18 Liberal Democrats and 3 Poole People members.

The election turnout was below 28 per cent. A low turnout is also expected in the Police and Crime Commissioner Election, which was held across Dorset yesterday.

Votes will be counted today, with the winner expected to be announced shortly after.
