West Olympians will join stars such as Mo Farah to challenge for sporting glory as contestants in a one-off revival of 1970s TV hit Superstars.

The show had a habit of humiliating unwary sports stars – infamously football legend Kevin Keegan – but the super-fit Olympians will be hopeful they are in shape to survive.

Among the medallists from Team GB taking part in the BBC1 Christmas special will be triathlete brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee going head-to-head once more.

They will aim to be crowned the best male and female all-rounders in the Superstars 2012 programme, to be hosted by Gabby Logan. The 16 competitors will tackle eight events and be filmed at the University of Bath.

It will feature track races over 100m and 800m, archery, javelin, a 50m swim, a kayak race, a cycling hill climb and the challenges in the gym tests.

Superstars was a huge hit when first broadcast in the 1970s and continued into the next decade with occasional revivals over the years. It provided thrills and spills when Kevin Keegan had a nasty crash during a cycling heat, hurdler David Hemery injured his ankle during a fall in the steeplechase, and squash player Jonah Barrington stormed out after his squat thrusts failed to meet the judges’ approval.

For this year’s Olympic special, swimmer Rebecca Adlington will mentor the athletes in the pool and pundits will include athletes Iwan Thomas and Denise Lewis.

Logan – whose footballer father Terry Yorath took part in the show – said it was one of her favourite shows as a child. Among the West stars taking part are shooter Peter Wilson, rower Helen Glover, swimmer Michael Jamieson and rider Laura Bechtolsheimer.
