A decent roundabout would have been all that was needed with motorists obeying the rules and sorting themselves out. On busy roads at peak times motorists usually let side entrants filter in. The planners should have faith in drivers and not get into the fashionable 'auntie knows best syndrome'. If there was all this money available why didn't the planners make the Wimborne bypass and the A31 East into dual carriageways? There is certainly enough width available.

Ferndown councillor Ian Smith said: "I have been complaining to the Highways Agency since this white elephant and waste of public money opened. The system only works when there is fairly light traffic. As soon as there's heavy traffic then traffic trying to enter the system from the minor roads cannot make progress when their lights go green as the roundabout is blocke d by traffic already on the roundabout stuck at intermediate lights. Similarly it can be difficult to exit the roundabout when one's exit is blocked by traffic already on the roundabout who are waiting at the next set of lights. Finally the lane system is completely confusing to people who aren't familiar with the roundabout system. So they cause further problems and dangers trying to get into the right lane.

Our visitors, who have not previously been through the roundabout, in almost every case go wrong. Many people we know actively avoid the roundabout, at all times of the day. No positive features. Can we have the old roundabout back please. The money would have been better spent at Ringwood sorting out the dangerous pinch points."

The Highways Agency didn't even consider the Merley problem and went ahead anyway with the flawed Canford Bottom scheme. As is now blatantly obvious the problem has not been sorted out - the A31 blocks up from Merley! Why don't these agencies ever talk to the local people who have much more knowledge than their computer generated models."

Maybe it does indeed save those travelling straight across the A31 all of four minutes off their journey times, but for me it actually adds between 20-30 minutes. I'm often stuck coming out of the Colehill exit, attempting to either get to the Stapehill/Ferndown exit or Ham Lane exit but the traffic lights change from red to green about four-five times before you can even move onto the roundabout as the other traffic is all bumper to bumper over the white lines and lights and prohi bits anyone trying to join the queue. Once lucky enough to have made it to the first set of lights, if I'm attempting to get to Ham Lane, I get in the outside lane and try to pass the Stapehill exit, but nine times out of 10 too many cars have pulled out or a bus has swung out only for those lights to change and thus we are all stuck once again. This roundabout is a nightmare at peak times and does nothing to help local residents whatsoever! They should have just left it alone."
