AN inspiring new music education project, BSO Blast, is set to sweep schools in Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset, Torbay and Cornwall  over the next three years, with over 24,000 young people offered the opportunity to work with the professional musicians of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

J P Morgan, the largest private employer in Bournemouth, is providing an education grant of £140,000 for the project in its first two years, following news that the Orchestra has been awarded funding from Arts Council England's Catalyst Fund to make the programme possible.

Together, the three partners will revolutionise the way young people across the region, including those in low income communities, can realise their musical ambitions.

BSO Blast begins at a grassroots level, offering teachers and students training in how to use music effectively in a classroom setting. Tailor-made to individual schools' needs and priorities, BSO professionals will work across the full spectrum of music to help inspire the next generation of musicians.

Large-scale music projects will bring children from across the region to perform together on stage in front of large audiences; and for those who show a particular talent the musicians of the BSO will also offer personal advice and encouragement.  Working with the region's music ensembles and youth orchestras, BSO Blast aims to ensure that every child has a clear route from the moment they pick up an instrument to becoming the performers – and teachers – of the future.

Dougie Scarfe, CEO of the Orchestra said: "The BSO has enjoyed a long relationship with J P Morgan, and thousands of children in the company's operating area have benefited as a result.  BSO Blast will take this work to a new level – not only inspiring young people to make music but creating development pathways for those who show talent, led by our professional musicians."
