Milborne Port church bells ringing again
THE bells at St John's Church in Milborne Port are back in place and in tune after being removed for £61,000 restoration works.
Several of the eight massive bells had not been removed since 1908 and the 1374-kilo tenor bell was manhandled out of the main doorway with just an inch to spare.
The bells were refurbished and tuned at John Taylor and Co in Loughborough and are now back in position with new cast iron supports and modern running gear.
John Baker, one of the church's 14 bellringers, said the bells, four of which date back to 1530, now handle much better and sound great.
