Microdermabrasion - skin rejuvenation treatment now available at Hidden Depths
SKIN Base Microdermabrasion is the latest treatment on offer at Shaftesbury's Hidden Depths - I went along to find out more.
Therapist Emma began with a thorough cleanse of my face while explaining the treatment's many benefits including the fact it is suitable for all skin types and is perfect for ageing skin - I sounded like the ideal candidate.
The treatment involves what can only be described as a complete vacuuming of the skin, an intense exfoliation and resurfacing treatment using ultra fine crystals that rejuvenate the skin. The tiny crystals are blasted onto the face through a handpiece and then the dead and damaged skin cells are 'hoovered' up through a tube. The gentle vacuum action achieves an immediate lifting effect on tired muscles, just like a 'workout' for the face. After an initial sweep across my face, jawline and neck, Emma targeted those areas most in need of attention including crows feet around the eyes, the nose to mouth lines and jowls. The treatment, which takes just 30 minutes, is painless and feels pleasantly invigorating.
Emma explained that the skin's normal renewal process is speeded up by the treatment (reducing cell renewal from around a month to just a few days). The crystals work as a gentle abrasive on the skin to remove dead skin cells layer by layer. The irregular shape of the crystals helps to work on hard to reach areas, without any damage to the skin.

The vacuum action of the machine stimulates the circulation and promotes increased blood flow to the area. The production of collagen and elastin is stimulated, which results in a firmer, more youthful looking skin.
This superficial peeling of the stratum corneum means the skin's thickness is gently removed layer by layer.
Emma was also keen to show me the "dust bag" containing the crystal, dead skin cells and blemishes removed during the 'vacuuming' session.
Emma advised on aftercare - no heavy make-up for 12 hours, no swimming for 24 hours, no sun exposure for 48 hours and just a simple moisturiser for 72 hours. If required, treatments can be performed every seven to10 days to get the best results.
As well as fine lines and wrinkles the treatment gives excellent results on stretch marks, recent scars, acne and acne scarring, pigmentation spots, dull, dry skin, uneven skin tone, blemishes, open pores, blackheads and sun damaged skin.
As well as offering a complete facial in less than 30 minutes, being non-invasive and non-surgical, microdermabrasion is obviously ideal for those squeamish about knives and needles.
Although visible results can be seen from the first session, more problematic skin may need a course of treatments - a single treatment is £38 with a course of three currently available for £96. The results of the treatment were immediately obvious - my skin felt tighter and smoother to the touch and looked rejuvenated. JS
