NORTH Dorset MP Bob Walter is backing the sixth annual Countryside Alliance Awards.

The awards are now open for nominations and Mr Walter is urging people to get involved.

The awards, nicknamed the Rural Oscars, aim to support and promote rural communities. The awards are given to help boost Britain's food and farming industry, small businesses, skills and enterprises. Mr Walter said: "These awards are an excellent way to promote the local businessmen and woman.

"Let's see if we can bring a British title home and tell a positive story about Dorset."

The awards cover categories including village shop, local food, enterprise and a grassroots award for campaigners.
