SHAFTESBURY Bowls Club ladies, winners of the North Dorset triples for two years, have turned up trumps in their first attempt in the county-wide Edna Paisley League for veterans, beating Weymouth club Melcombe Regis by seven shots in the final at Blandford.

Ladies' captain Eileen Curtis and her rink of Jean Hardstaff and Jean Warburton eased to a 27-14 win and though Vera Barrett's squad of Ann Whitmee and Carole Wiles went down 13-19 after a close struggle, the trophy was Shaftesbury's on aggregate.

Former club captain Bob Bowden won Shaftesbury's season-long club night marathon by nine shots from new member Karen Green. A total of 49 players were involved over 14 evenings. Six ladies finished in the top 11 places, and 10 relative novices learned a lot from more experienced members.
