Hotel Continues Literary History With New Poet in Residence
One of Dorset's landmark hotels is to put itself back on the literary map by recruiting a Poet in Residence.
Hotel Miramar on Bournemouth's East Cliff has a long-standing history of attracting artists and authors, and indeed was the favourite haunt of author J. R. R. Tolkien who holidayed at the hotel regularly for over thirty years until his death in 1972. To this day a blue commemorative plaque can be seen outside the front entrance of the hotel in memory of his time in the town.
It is widely known that the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and Middle Earth creator penned much of his work relaxing and contemplating whilst enjoying the stunning seascape views from the hotel gardens.
Now, forty years on, the Hotel Miramar will once again become the focus of creative talent as local poet, author and musician Steve Biddle becomes the Poet in Residence.

Hotel Director David Bailey said, "Steve is an amazingly talented poet and a born entertainer. We have some exciting plans ahead, including monthly poetry evenings, workshops and other events. I think Tolkien would be enormously proud that another writer is set to establish close links with his favourite haunt."
The first of many events will be Poetry Corner on Monday 19th November 2012. This will become a regular opportunity for members of the public, local poets and hotel guests to participate in an informal gathering to hear Steve read his poetry, for other poets to share their work and for a general discussion to celebrate the art of words.
Poetry Corner will be held at 6pm on the third Monday of every month and is a free event with anyone welcome to join in.
Steve will also be hosting poetry workshops and seminars throughout the year, will exhibit some of his framed poems, and is to offer a bespoke service for wedding couples at the hotel looking for something unique to help celebrate their special day.
Speaking of his appointment, Steve said, "I am delighted to become Poet in Residence at Hotel Miramar. For me poetry is about not only sharing thoughts and dreams, it is about engaging with people. The Tolkien connection is also appealing, and the hotel management have invited me to stay experience of that."
