THE SIGHTS, sounds and smells of steam locomotion will soon be returning to a landmark viaduct that has stood unused for more than four decades.

Charlton Viaduct at Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet is part of the original Somerset and Dorset Line, and was made redundant as part of the infamous Beeching cuts in 1966.

Since then, the towering, Grade II Listed structure has served as a dramatic backdrop to the stunning Kilver Court gardens but the age of steam is set to make a return at a special event over the August bank holiday weekend.

Andy Lunness of Recreation Railways has team up with Kilver Court owner Roger Saul to set up a railway line across the historic viaduct.

From Saturday 29th to Monday 31th August, people are invited to take a ride across Somerset's longest viaduct in Andy's miniature steam engine Tinkerbell. The 15-minute rides will run from 10am to 5pm each day. As well as having a lot of fun, passengers will be able to enjoy breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside.

Other attractions at the family event include a Tractor Ted stand, a Sharpham Park barbecue and hog roast, face painting, traditional ice cream, a railways heritage display and much more.
