AN adventurer from Gillingham has raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK by trekking his way across Costa Rica.

Ian Rennard embarked on the charity challenge when he found himself with time on his hands after being made redundant following a 25-year career in banking.

The 10-day trek took Ian through farming communities, coffee plantations and oak forests, deep into cloudforest and dense tropical rainforest. He also climbed one of the country's highest volcanoes before rafting down the Pacuare River to the Caribbean coast. After enduring scorching temperatures, hacking through tangled jungle and navigating white water rapids to complete the trip of a lifetime, Ian has also secured a new job as a financial advisor. Ian said the highlights of the trip were the breathtaking landscape and close encounters with wildlife including racoons, snakes, toucans, sloths, armadillos, crocodiles and humming birds.

"This was one of the most amazing times of my life and I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to undertake it," he said.

"I also met some fantastic people and, as a team, we got our selves through some tough times and obstacles.

"I would like to thank everyone who has donated. I would also like to thank Colin Eggleton and my father-in-law, Tom Crabbe, who was relentless in his pursuit of sponsorship money."

Ian paid for the trip himself so every penny raised goes straight to Cancer Research UK. He explained that the charity is close to his heart as his mother-in-law and father-in-law have both received treatment for cancer in recent years.

Donations can still be left in the collection box at The Barber Shop on Station Road in Gillingham or visit www.justgiving.com/ianrennard
