Nice play between Dan Cox and Lee Gale allowed the ball to break kindly for Cox - who managed to direct a header into the net.
Buckland kept their composure, but struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
The Gills nearly put the game out of sight two minutes after the restart. Harry Baker's ball across the face of goal was just out of reach of Cox - who was inches away from doubling his tally.
Danny Thompson was carried off the pitch on 50 minutes after injuring himself while closing down an opposing player.
Thompson was taken to hospital and could miss the remainder of the season. He was replaced by Aaron Rodriguez, who immediately made an impact.
His lofted ball found Lee Gale unmarked in the six yard box and he vollied home to secure the three points for the Gills.
Gillingham rounded off the scoring when substitute Pete Knox fired home after some unselfish play from Gale allowed Knox to fire home from close range.
