Gillingham Foodbank clients top 1,000
GILLINGHAM Foodbank has now provided emergency help to more than 1,000 people since it opened on 1st December last year.
The clients are spread right across the Blackmore Vale: in Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sturminster, Stalbridge, Wincanton and the surrounding rural areas.
Distribution centre manager Sam says: "The sheer number of people helped by the Foodbank reflects the need in our country as a whole. We were astounded by the support during Harvest when we received 1.5 tonnes of food from local churches, schools and community groups. The support from our supermarkets – Waitrose, the Cooperative, Asda and Tesco – and from other companies and organisations has been fantastic, and we say a huge thank-you to them."
Looking ahead, Sam adds: "Next year will probably see a rise in the number of people we will help, because of economic conditions and the fact that people are still learning about our existence, with more agencies joining with us continually."
