Gary Johnson: 'Something has to give' if Yeovil Town crowds drop below 4,000
Gary Johnson has warned “something has to give” if Yeovil Town’s average attendance drops beneath 4,000 people.
The Glovers’ boss revealed he is working to a budget calculated on at least that many supporters attending every home game at Huish Park.
The current average gate stands at 4,005, perilously close to the magic mark that was most recently exceeded at the beginning of October. Just five games all season have attracted more than 4,000 fans through the turnstiles, one of which came against Premier League West Bromwich Albion.
Johnson said: “I don’t know how many people would accept Yeovil in our position and competing for the play-offs. I can’t remember the last time Yeovil were in the top half of the table over the seasons. It does seem that you have got to win every week to get the support you need to sustain the challenge.

“Unfortunately we are not going to win every week, that’s the nature of our club, but we will do a good job in trying to compete. Something has got to give if the figures don’t match up and it could be anything.”
The Glovers travel to Swindon Town today just four points away from npower League One’s play-off places. They return to home soil seven days later to entertain Carlisle United having visited Crawley Town on Tuesday. Johnson said he appreciated the supporters that did make the effort to back their team and encouraged more to not only create a better atmosphere but also boost their top six bid.
He said: “The people that are there you love to death and I want to thank every one of them individually for being there. I have always felt that way. They are the people that have turned up. Unfortunately if it just goes below a certain amount the atmosphere becomes a poor one. Even though everyone wants you to win because there isn’t a buzz there with substantial numbers it becomes a bit like a reserve game.
“That’s no reflection on the people that are there, because they try and we love them. But if you are looking at it from a business point of view I have been given a budget based on gates of 4,000 and if we don’t get that then it is going to be difficult.”
