Future is green at St John’s First School in Wimborne
THE St John’s Eco team which includes members of the community and staff has secured its first Green Flag award. Eco schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey.
For its first Green Flag the school has focused on developing its grounds, energy and waste and global perspectives. Each class has its own vegetable patch and the whole school is involved in planting, nurturing and harvesting what is grown. The pond area, which has been developed and is used in curriculum time, is full of life. This year the focus has been on energy and waste. Pupils took part in Earth Hour and the student council decided this should be an event each term to raise awareness of reducing energy use. Recycling is part of everyday school life and they now have their own book exchange. They created a much used greenhouse out of two litre plastic bottles.
The Green Flag assessor commented that the children at St John’s have a very high understanding of global perspectives.
Mrs Sharpe, who has led the Eco Warriors as part of student council said:

“I am so proud of the prestigious Green Flag achievement. The children are fully engaged and we have embedded Eco into our learning across the curriculum. We have worked really hard and I believe if we all work together we can become even more sustainable.”
