RNLI lifeboats and firefighters were called to a fishing boat engulfed in flames off the Dorset coast last night.

Crews raced to the scene just after 10pm following reports of a vessel ablaze between Baiter and Fisherman's dock.

Both of the town's lifeboats were sent, with Dorset Fire and Rescue Service personnel onboard to put out the flames.

They discovered a small 20-24ft fishing vessel well alight and, after initial reports to Portland Coastguard of two people in the water, they searched the area but found nobody nearby.

The volunteer crew on the all-weather lifeboat rigged the hose for the firefighters to douse the blaze, which was soon brought under control, before the inshore lifeboat towed the vessel to shore where the coastguard and another fire crew made it safe.
