Ferndown Industrial Estate on its way to becoming a BID
THE Ferndown and Uddens industrial estate are working towards becoming the first in the south west to gain prestigious Business Improvement District (BID) status. A Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership between the local business community that develops and takes forward a project or projects that will benefit their trading environment.
As part of this process one of the first steps was to recruit and appoint a BID development manager to take the process forward to ballot in early 2014. BID chairman Russell Bowyer of Custom World welcomed Gary Dale to the role. Gary is an experienced business to business marketer who will be working part time on the BID process. Next steps include a new website and consultation with all businesses on the estate. This is expected to generate a number of projects that businesses want to see developed, and from this a BID proposal will be written for the ballot next year.
The majority of BIDs exist in town centres, however there are increasing numbers in industrial areas, as well as commercial and mixed-use locations. Ferndown and Uddens Industrial Estate is home to over 300 businesses, covering a diverse range of activities, including retail, manufacturing, distribution and business services. Forming a BID will provide the means to support business collaboration, addressing issues of mutual concern such as better Broadband provision, improved security and enhanced accessibility. Since 2004 the number of formal British based BIDs has risen to 160 with Ferndown and Uddens BID hoping to add themselves to the areas that are reaping the benefits of focussed investment, collaboration and local action.

Gary Dale commented:
“I have worked with businesses on the Industrial Estate, purchased goods there and also live in Ferndown, so it would be something special to help the area make a success of this opportunity. The idea of reinvesting revenue in a local area is nothing new, but the tight focus of a BID gives real control and a voice for businesses on the Industrial Estate. Recent more positive economic news places even more emphasis on the need to provide the local support and trading environment that businesses require. We will soon have a new website and this first consultation event is just the start of us canvassing opinions from around the industrial estate on the issues that matter to them. I also welcome any feedback from local businesses and interested organisations.”
