Norman and Mary Ware were about to have dinner at their home, Collingwood, Mapperton Hill, on Monday night when they heard a huge crash and rushed outside.
Their son Richard, 60, alerted emergency services, and police, two ambulances, two fire crews and a police helicopter attended.
Fire crews found two people trapped in the wrecked silver Peugeot car and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free them.
Mr Lewis was taken to Odstock Hospital, Salisbury, but died from his injuries.
No other vehicle was involved in the collision, but a second car was being driven ahead on the same road by friends of Mr Lewis.
They returned to the scene after becoming concerned.
Floral tributes to Mr Lewis were left at the scene of the crash on Tuesday.
